Oxi Courage Award honoree Vladimir Kara-Murza Released from prison in Russia

WASHINGTON, DC, August 2, 2024 — The Washington Oxi Day Foundation welcomes with great delight and relief the release of OXI Courage Award honoree Vladimir Kara-Murza and 15 of his fellow political prisoners from Russian captivity.

Kara-Murza, a Russian journalist and activist, was wrongfully imprisoned on April 12, 2022, for speaking out against the war in Ukraine. He was eventually sentence to 25 years of strict regime and was held in solitary confinement for the last 9 months.

He continued to speak against the Putin regime from behind bars and in May of 2024 won a Pulitzer Prize for his writing from prison.

Despite being poisoned by the Russian government twice, and almost losing his life both times, when Russia invaded Ukraine, Kara-Murza courageously left his family in the US, flew to Moscow and publicly denounced Putin’s invasion.  He was captured and imprisoned hours later.

On October 25, 2018 Kara-Murza was honored at the OXI Courage Awards in Washington, DC at the US Institute of Peace before hundreds of US policymakers and thought leaders.

After Vladimir’s imprisonment his wife, Evgenia Kara-Murza, courageously became her husband’s voice as she campaigned for his freedom, and for the freedom of thousands of political prisoners held in Russia for speaking truth.

At the 2022 OXI Courage Awards, Evgenia, accompanied by their daughters Katya and Sonya, inspired the audience with powerful remarks which you can watch here.

In May of this year Evgenia participated in the first Global Courage Awards in Panama City, Panama and presented the Global Courage Award for Truth to Venezuela’s Maria Machado.  You can see her remarks here.

We look forward to Vladimir being reunited with Evgenia and their family and for his safe return home to the Untied States.

Thank you, Vladimir and Evgenia, for your profound #OXIcourage!
