— President Obama calls Aung San Suu Kyi “icon of democracy who’s inspired so many people…around the world” with her “unbreakable courage and determination” —
WASHINGTON, DC, November 19, 2012 — The Washington Oxi Day Foundation saluted Battle of Crete Award recipient Aung San Suu Kyi who is being featured today in headline news all around the world. In the historic first visit by a US President to Burma, President Barack Obama today visited Aung San Suu Kyi at her home where she spent much of the last two decades under house arrest.
President Obama said after their meeting, “I am very pleased that one of my first stops is to visit with an icon of democracy who’s inspired so many people not just in this country but all around the world,” Obama said from a porch of the home after meeting with Suu Kyi for about half an hour. “Here, through so many difficult years is where she displayed such unbreakable courage and determination.”
We are proud to have honored such a deserving individual who displayed in modern times the same courage and determination for democracy and freedom that Greece did during WWII and, like Greece, inspired so many people around the world.
