WASHINGTON, DC, November 11, 2022 – This Veterans Day, the Washington Oxi Day Foundation salutes all men and women in uniform who have served courageously and selflessly to protect freedom and democracy around the world.
For 12 years, the Foundation has taken pride in honoring distinguished veterans from WWI, WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War at a moving ceremony at the National World War II Memorial on the Mall in Washington, DC.
Our distinguished honorees this year were as follows:
Dr. George Hatsopoulos was posthumously honored with the Vasilios S. Haseotes Service Award. He was introduced by Vasilios S. and Aphrodite B. Haseotes Family Foundation Trustee George Pantazelos and the award was accepted by Dr. Hatsopoulos’s wife Daphne Hatsopoulos and his son Nicho Hatsopoulos.

Veteran George Poppas was honored with the Oxi Service Award. His son, the highest-ranking Greek-American in the U.S. Military, and one of only 17 four-star generals in the U.S. Army, Commanding General of U.S. Army Forces Command Gen. Andrew Poppas offered powerful remarks on courage and service as he accepted the award on behalf of his father.

Decorated Vietnam War veteran Col. Jack Jacobs was presented with the Calamos Service Award by decorated Vietnam War veteran and Chairman of the National Hellenic Museum John Calamos.

Ambassador of Greece to the U.S. Alexandra Papadopoulou and Embassy of Greece Defense Attaché Col. Panagiotis Vlachopoulos offered remarks about the importance and legacy of Oxi Day to a crowd featuring honoree friends and family, Foundation sponsors and military attaches from Greece and Cyprus as well as several other allied countries.

On October 28, Oxi Day Foundation representatives laid a wreath at Arlington Cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknown led by Gen. Andrew Poppas, Embassy of Greece Defense Attaché Col. Panagiotis Vlachopoulos, Embassy of Cyprus Defense Attaché Col. George Ioannou and Washington Oxi Day Foundation Executive Director Mike Manatos.
