Good News for First Battle of Crete Award Winner

News

Oxi Day Battle of Crete Award recipient Aung San Suu Kyi will no longer be confined to her country, as last week she received her first passport in 24 years.

This world-renowned human rights activist could not leave Burma – because of 15 years of house arrest and fear of not being allowed to re-enter her country if she left – to receive her 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, her 2008 Congressional Gold Medal, nor her 2011 Oxi Day Battle of Crete Award.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was asked to bring Aung San Suu Kyi her Oxi Day Battle of Crete Award when the Secretary visited her last December, the first such visit by a Secretary of State to Burma in more than 50 years.
