Global Coverage of the Second Annual Washington Oxi Day Celebration

News

In addition to spreading through Washington’s hundreds of policymakers and opinion leaders, Greece’s Oxi Day story is spreading around the world following the Second Annual Washington Oxi Day Foundation Celebration on October 24- 25, 2012.

Hundreds of thousands of Chinese people learned of modern history’s most consequential David vs. Goliath story — Greece’s WWII victories for democracy and freedom — through coverage of Chinese dissident and human rights activist Chen Guancheng receiving the 2012 Oxi Day Award. Radio Free Asia, which disseminates articles throughout Asia, featured a report on its English and Mandarin websites, as did the American-based Chinese Aid Association and the Chinese dissident website Jasmine Revolution.

Hundreds of thousands more in Pakistan learned of the singular courage of the women of Crete in WWII through newspaper coverage of Dr. Fouzia Saeed receiving the 2012 Battle of Crete Award. Several of Pakistan’s most prominent newspapers reported on the event, as did the national news agency of Pakistan, the Associated Press of Pakistan which provides articles to over 84 significant newspapers throughout this country of nearly 200 million people.

Media which aired the VOA coverage of the events included SKAI (pronounced Sky) of Athens, the top-rated news and information broadcaster of Greece and its nationwide network of affiliates, Radio City International of Thessaloniki, TV Chalkidiki in northern Greece, Hellenic Media of Canada and its affiliates from Vancouver to Toronto, as well as Galaxias of Sydney, Australia. Coverage was also made available on the VOA website.
