Alexander Kitroeff

My research and publishing focuses on nationalism and ethnicity in modern Greece and its diaspora, and its manifestations across a broad spectrum, from politics to sports. In 2018 the American University in Cairo Press is publishing my latest book The Greeks and the Making of Modern Egypt: from Muhamad Ali to Nasser. I recently completed a book-length ms. on the history of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and I am preparing expanded, updated edition a book I published in 2010, a history of the Athens-based Panathinaikos sports association Ελλάς, Ευρώπη, Παναθηναϊκός: 100 Χρόνια Ελληνική Ιστορία – the revised and updated edition will be published by Kedros Publishers in Athens. My earlier publications include a book on the history of the Greeks in Egypt between the two world wars, a book on the Greeks in the Americas and a volume with articles on the history of the Jews in Greece. I am also continuing my collaboration with film director Maria Iliou for whom I have acted as historical consultant in four documentaries. Our current project is a 5-part history of the city of Athens, from 1821 to the present.
