Toomaj Salehi

Toomaj Salehi is an Iranian rapper, activist, and political dissident whose fearless lyrics challenge the repressive rule of the Iranian regime. His music speaks to the struggles of the Iranian people, addressing state violence, corruption, and social injustice. Toomaj has become a symbol of resistance, using his art to amplify the voices of those silenced by oppression.

In October 2022, amid the nationwide protests following the killing of Mahsa Jina Amini, Toomaj was arrested for his outspoken criticism of the government. He was charged with “corruption on Earth,” a charge that carries the death penalty in Iran. While imprisoned, he was subjected to brutal torture and solitary confinement for 253 days. His detention sparked international outcry, with activists and human rights organizations demanding his release. Among other international recognitions, he was awarded the 2024 Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent, and was ranked the number one most influential person in music for 2025 by SPIN Magazine.

Despite the risks, Toomaj remains defiant. His struggle is part of a larger movement against tyranny, demonstrating the power of art to challenge injustice. At Mapping the Global Oppression, his work stands as a testament to the resilience of those who refuse to be silenced.
