Join us on October 24 and 25 in Washington, DC for the Second Annual Washington Oxi Day Celebration as we:

  1. Remind the world of the day Greece refused to surrender, inflicting a fatal wound that brought down Hitler’s Axis Forces in WWII; and
  2. Recognize modern day heroes who exemplify the David vs. Goliath Oxi Day Spirit by courageously fighting for freedom and democracy around the world.

Presentation of the Greatest Generation Awards at the National WWII Memorial

Wednesday, October 24, 2:30 pm

National World War II Memorial [17th Street, NW between Constitution and Independence Avenues]

A very moving ceremony that commemorates Greece’s contributions to the Allied victory in WWII and honors three World War II veterans: an American, a Greek and a Greek-American

Featuring:

  • His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America
  • Assistant Secretary of Defense Zachary Lemnios (a Greek-American)
  • WWII Veteran and former Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Hon. Benjamin Gilman
  • Antonios Markos Kounalakis, a member of the WWII Cretan Resistance Freedom Fighters and host of the first meeting for the formation of the National Resistance of Greece.
  • WWII Greek-American Veteran, Silver Star and Purple Heart holder, Brigadier General Mike P. Cokinos

Join members of the Jewish community at this event highlighting the extraordinary courage shown by Greeks to protect the Jewish community in Greece and honoring Elie Wiesel for his lifelong contribution to fighting anti-Semitism, discrimination and intolerance.
