#OXIcourage Past and Present Celebrated Worldwide on 80th Anniversary of Oxi Day

The Washington Oxi Day Foundation marked the 80th anniversary of the famous “Oxi!” with our 10th Annual Oxi Courage and Service Awards broadcast live from the National Press Club. With the courage of the Greeks in mind, we honored – before tens-of-thousands around the world – the #OXIcourage of those who defended our freedoms in war and those who courageously fight the evils that threaten humankind today.

The Oxi Courage and Service Awards featured special appearances by:

 

  • Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis
  • Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi
  • Granddaughter of Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas – from the exact spot, 80 years later to the day, of the famous “Oxi!” heard around the world, Ioanna Phoca
  • Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America Elpidophoros

This year’s distinguished honorees included:

 

  • Recipient of the first Calamos Service Award, decorated veteran “Flying Greek” Steve Pisanos
  • Recipient of the Dilboy Service Award, decorated veteran Andrew Mousalimas
  • Recipient of the Metropolitan Chrysostomos Award, civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis
  • Recipient of the Oxi Courage Award, courageous Wuhan Whistleblower Doctors battling COVID at the pandemic’s epicenter
  • Recipient of the Oxi Courage Award, Dr. Joseph Costa of Baltimore, MD who selflessly gave his life trying to save COVID patients on the front line
